Announcing our 2009 Dig Fund project: Skyway Park!
We are thrilled to announce Skyway Park as the 2009 Pomegranate Center Dig Fund recipient.
The Dig Fund is a Pomegranate Center program that helps deserving projects with great ideas but limited resources become a reality. Each year, we select a project and partner with that community to build the resources they need to see the project all the way through. (More about the Dig Fund)
In 2009, our Dig Fund partners will be the amazing Friends of Skyway Park. Skyway is a small community in unincorporated King County, bordered by Seattle, Tukwila and Renton. The 23 acre Skyway Park nestled between two business districts and dense residential neighborhoods. For this reason the park’s health and vitality have a direct impact on the health and vitality of the whole community. Unfortunately, however, the park has been a largely under-utilized asset, due mainly to serious concerns about safety.
Pomegranate Center had the honor of working with Skyway residents throughout 2008 to re-imagine Skyway Park – what would it look like and how would it be used if it was the community asset they all want it to be? Out of a series of community meetings and design workshops grew a strong community-generated vision for the park.
Now the community has a great plan and lots of enthusiasm, but they don’t have the resources to implement the plan. Enter the Dig Fund! Pomegranate Center board and staff selected Friends of Skyway Park as our 2009 Dig Fund Partner so we can keep them motivated in realizing their vision. We’ll work with them to raise the resources needed to build an “early success project for their park, which could include gateways, kiosks, benches, shelters, or even a small amphitheater.
So, what comes next? We are working with Skyway residents as we write this to sketch out a plan of action for the next year. We will be sure to keep you posted on what we are up to, where we are headed and how you can get involved.
