High Point

Generating community pride in an affordable neighborhood

In partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority, Pomegranate Center worked with residents of this rebuilt public housing development to design an amphitheater, pocket park, shelters, and a community garden enclosed by a decorative fence.

  • The High Point Market Garden has provided a pillar of stability during a period of transition for new residents. Each community member brought his or her particular skills to its creation, while a common vision has generated community pride and stewardship.Market Garden where hundreds of individuals created fence boards based on their initials and where we constructed an entryway and a shelter utilizing salvaged cedar trees from the site.  The shelter has a green roof and posts are carved with images of plants grown in the garden.
  • Pocket park shelter was also constructed with site-salvaged trees, providing a roof over a picnic table with a carved concrete surface, and benches made of metal and salvaged wood form a deconstructed building.
  • The Phoenix Amphitheater provides a venue for outdoor celebrations and gatherings.  It’s located in the neighborhood’s central park and faces the new Community Center. During our workshops with community members, we learned from neighbors that the single most important characteristic of their new community was its cultural diversity. People from all corners of the world were living at High Point. This inspired the amphitheater’s bird theme, which celebrate this community’s “flocking together.”  The columns are carved with images of birds from each of the seven continents, and the stage features an image of a phoenix, celebrating the rebirth of the community.
