Pickering Farm Community Teaching Garden

Demonstrating low-impact urban landscaping in a living classroom

Designed by Pomegranate Center, Landscape Architect, J.T. Atkins and many community volunteers, this community teaching garden demonstrates ways to minimize the effects of urban landscaping on the natural environment while also providing an inviting space for the community. It is a living classroom on techniques that save water, improve water quality, preserve natural habitat and reduce solid waste. We worked with over 100 volunteers to build four kiosks, an outdoor classroom, two benches and a fence. With volunteers, we also installed green roofs—planted with strawberries and sedums—on three outdoor structures.
