Terrace Hill
Liberating parking spaces for children
Pomegranate Center created a community gathering place for Terrace Hill, an 18-unit apartment complex owned by the St. Andrew’s Housing Group, a nonprofit developer of affordable housing. Prior to this project, Terrace Hill residents—mainly of Hispanic descent—had no public gathering space nor safe place for their children to play or wait for the school bus. (The only way to the schoolbus stop was a steep and winding road.) We held design workshops with residents to gain their input for the new gathering place and amenities. Then, with volunteers and donated materials, we constructed a pedestrian path to the bus stop, a bus shelter and a children’s playscape adjacent to an adult seating area in what had been an asphalt parking lot.
